How To Store Seasonal Decorations

how to store seasonal decorations

Decorating my home for various seasons brings me so much joy, but with using so many seasonal items comes the need to store them when they’re not in use. Depending on how many decor items you use, the storing process can be time-consuming and even overwhelming. Not to mention the amount of storage space seasonal decorations can take up! Don’t worry. Today, I’m sharing my go-to, no-fuss tricks for storing seasonal decorations.

But before we get into it, for more general sanity-saving tips and tricks, check out my post on how to keep a clean house!

How To Store Seasonal Decorations

Choose a dedicated storage area.

Whether it’s the top shelf of your closet, a small section of your garage, or even the top shelf in your garage, having a dedicated storage area is key to keeping your seasonal decorations organized. Ideally, the space will be easily accessible and provide more than enough space for all of your decor items, with enough room to add more (it’s inevitable).

Sort by season.

One of the best and easiest ways to store seasonal decorations is to sort them by season ahead of time. Storing decorations by season, and their coordinating holidays helps to keep them organized and easier to find each time you update your home decor. The system that works best for me looks like this:

  • Winter: Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day
  • Spring: Easter
  • Summer: Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day
  • Fall: Halloween, Thanksgiving

Use uniform storage bins.

Another tip that made a huge difference for me is to use uniform storage bins to store all of my seasonal decor. Using storage containers of the same size and shape not only optimizes space but also ensures they’re easier to stack. Grab more than enough durable storage bins with lids, and just make sure to wrap fragile items in bubble wrap or tissue paper to protect them from the weight of any items that might be stacked on top of them. Larger storage containers also allow room for your collections to grow!

As you bring out your holiday decorations, it’s the perfect opportunity to also tidy up and store away your everyday decor to avoid clutter. By clearing space for your seasonal items, you’ll create a more organized and festive atmosphere while keeping your home from feeling overcrowded. Try rotating out your usual decor for the season, packing away items you don’t need right now into the same storage bins that held your seasonal decor. This not only frees up space but also keeps everything looking fresh and intentional. Plus, when the holidays are over, you’ll have fewer things to sort through as you transition back to your everyday setup!

However, there’s one exception to this rule…

The Exception: Holiday Storage Containers

All of my seasonal decor is stored in containers of the same shape and size, except for my holiday decorations. Things like Christmas trees and wreaths require specially designed holiday decor storage to ensure they maintain their quality and shape. I store my Christmas tree in a durable and portable storage bag, and my wreaths in a similar bag designed specifically for wreaths. Be sure to store these near the regular storage bins for each holiday for easy access!

Label everything.

Another key to keeping seasonal decorations organized is to label everything. This makes it so much easier to find what you’re looking for, and will save you from having to dig through your entire collection just to pull out a few specific things. Label each bin by season, then label any containers inside the bins to keep them organized. This will also make it a lot easier when it comes time to put your decor away, as each item will already have a dedicated space to be stored no more playing Tetris trying to squeeze everything back in like it was before!.

Label makers are super affordable these days, and believe me, you’ll find plenty more uses for it!

Take inventory.

Finally, as you pull things out of storage and put things away each season, take inventory of what you have. Make a note of the items you didn’t use and consider donating them. As someone who always prefers a minimalist approach to decor, I try to take advantage of every opportunity to minimize the stuff in my house. Hanging on to things you’re not using only takes up valuable storage space, so let it go when it’s time to say goodbye!
