With 4 kids all learning from home, it can be hard to manage how each of them uses technology. My daughter Tess is finishing up middle school this year and spends a lot of time online for virtual learning and connecting with friends. Her screen time has definitely increased because it’s the only way she can socialize with friends and while I don’t like it, I also have to understand her need to spend time with friends. ⁣

Thanks to @google Families, parents now have a free, comprehensive guide that helps them to navigate various topics regarding internet safety and well-being. The Google Families Hub is centered around five key topic areas -popular tech, parental controls, online safety and well-being, which is Google’s free program “Be Internet Awesome.” Using this program, I can teach my kids fundamentals of digital citizenship and safety. ⁣

I use both DSLR and iPhone photos in my personal and work life. I love the details, depth of field & color of DSLR photos but I also enjoy the ability to capture real life moments fast and instantly with my iPhone. Plus the quality of phone cameras have gotten so much better! ⁣

I personally use both types of photos on my feed and blog and can’t really choose one or the other because each serves its own purpose.⁣ The trick is not limiting yourself to one or the other, and knowing how to mix them naturally.

Mom burnout- what does it look like for you?

For me it’s the endless laundry I have to do after a family vacation, the need to remember and execute all the tasks for myself and the kids, the micromanaging of all the house chores that I feel I do best (“maternal gatekeeping”) even though it ultimately means more work, stress and mental load for myself.

It’s an endless cycle, and thanks to an enlightening discussion I had with my partner @go_faar & @womensmentalhealthdoc, I learned that the burnout is not caused by us, the mothers, but the system that fails families.

In the latest blog post, I share my own story of burnout, and how “maternal gatekeeping” has me doing a lot more work than I can take on. I also discuss the cost of “martyr mode” which @womensmentalhealthdoc explains as a way of “making yourself smaller and smaller in the service of your child that feels noble at first, but ultimately can lead to resentment, bitterness & mental health issues of your own.”

If you’ve been following me for some time, you know that I too, experienced mental health issues due to living in martyr mode. I try my best not to be a martyr, but I still find myself struggling in this generational pattern. If you can relate to any of this, you will find today’s blog post useful. Both my husband and I visited Hawaii for the first time in our 20’s on our honeymoon. We still talk about how lucky our kids are, as we try to bring them to the island every chance we can get.

We work hard, save and travel, because we now know that traveling is life’s greatest teacher. It opens our eyes to new people, culture & food and helps us to be more tolerant & understanding of different lifestyles.

Traveling is a privilege we don’t take for granted, and thanks to the sacrifices of our immigrant parents, we can now introduce our kids to wider perspectives in life.

Thank you @hawaiianairlines and @sheratonwaikiki for inviting us to experience the beauty of Hawaii in new ways. We learned a lot, ate the best foods and made so many more memories together. It was much needed for all of us, and I hope more families get to experience your beauty in 2021 and beyond. Stay tuned for a complete guide to covid safe family travel to Hawaii!
