The holiday season is an exciting time but when you are a parent, it can also be quite stressful. With all the preparations like holiday shopping, kids’ events, travel, family gatherings and excess eating and drinking, this season can also bring added chaos and unwanted headaches.

Managing stress can be difficult with so much going on during this time of the year. Here are five ways to help you manage stress and headaches:

1. Be realistic, not perfect

Families change and grow. Sometimes things don’t go as you expect them to, and that’s okay. You can’t control everything. Just like your growing kids, traditions can change. Learn to be flexible and embrace the changes, both big and small.

2. Don’t abandon healthy habits like eating & sleeping

Taking care of basic needs is the best way to keep stress at bay. Skipping meals and losing sleep will only result in you feeling sluggish, irritated and leave you vulnerable to illness.

3. Set aside self-care time (take a breather)

Make sure you are setting aside at least 15 minutes a day for quality “me time.” Read a book, go for a walk or get your nails done. These are the best times to unwind, relax and give yourself much needed self-care.

4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

The holidays should not be a one man (or woman) show. If you’re struggling, there are people who are ready to support you. Tis the season to be helpful and be grateful for family and friends who surround us.

5. Set aside family differences

Don’t let family tension and differences get to you. This is a time to set aside your differences and just enjoy each other’s company. There are many things to be grateful for despite the differences!

If you still can’t avoid the pounding pressures of the season, here are some great OTC remedies you can use that act as quickly as your headache starts.

KnowYourOTCs.org has a great tool that allows you to select the perfect pain relief option.

In under 2 minutes, the tool will consider your lifestyle, current medications, and any specific health circumstances, to provide guidance on the correct pain reliever for you. Not only is learning to read the Drug Facts label important but so is understanding how your personal risk factors should be considered when selecting an OTC pain reliever.

Holiday break with family

As for me, I’m enjoying the holiday break with my family and trying my best to keep headaches away. Happy New Year!

  1. Great advice! So many of us sacrifice our well-being over the holidays and then we are wondering why we are completely spent and drained once they are over. P.S. love your pics!

  2. Great tips for managing stress and minimizing headaches, not just for the holiday season, but for all the time. I’m so guilty of not asking for help, and it can cause major stress which then leads to headaches. Thanks for sharing these tips!
