Why You Should Take Maternity Photos

Out of three of my pregnancies, I only took one set of maternity photos. This is one of my biggest regrets, because I now realize how beautiful each and every pregnancy is and how important it is to capture our bodies during this sacred time.

This is the reason why I absolutely love maternity photography. And it brings me so much joy to capture this intimate, vulnerable and magical time of a woman’s life for others.

I recently had the opportunity to take photos for my dear friend Esther who is pregnant with her third baby. Through this post, I want to share my thoughts on why every woman should take their maternity photos with hope that you won’t be left with the same regrets like me.

1. Pregnancy is the hardest but most beautiful time of a woman’s life

What can be more beautiful than carrying a growing human body inside you? A microscopic cell transforms into a pea-sized embryo, then a fetus, then a tiny human baby and the miracle of life and birth never ceases to amaze me.

Even after carrying and birthing three children, I’m still awed by this cycle of life. Pregnancy and birth are the closest we come to a real life miracle, don’t you think?

2. Pregnancy is fleeting (and you will miss it)

I know how long the 10 months can feel, especially the last month when every week feels like a year. But once the baby is out you realize how fast the pregnancy passed, and sometimes almost wish to do it again. I have hard pregnancies and don’t necessarily like being pregnant, but I still find myself missing this time of my life from time to time.

Pregnancy goes by really fast, and it’s too sacred of a time not to capture it in a meaningful way.

3. Pregnancy is sexy

The fertile and maternal glow of a pregnant woman is so beautiful and sexy, I wish more people will see this. Despite the weight gain, stretch marks, hyper-pigmentation or whatever else you’re dealing with, there’s something so strong, maternal and radiant about a pregnant woman.

This fertile goddess-like beauty is so sexy, I hope every pregnant woman realizes this!

4. Pregnancy deserves to be celebrated

Like any other important milestone like a wedding, new home, new baby and new job, every pregnancy deserves to be celebrated. Remember, pregnancy is not all about the baby, it’s about the mom too!

I hope this post convinces you to take maternity photos during your pregnancy! There’s no set time to take maternity photos because this really depends on the woman but I’d recommend sometime between 28-36 weeks when the mom is big enough to show but not too big and tired for photos.

Yes it’s an investment of time and money but the photos and memories are priceless and you will realize years down the road how beautiful and radiant you were during each pregnancy.

So embrace your inner goddess and let her shine, mamas!

Thank you Esther for allowing me to capture this beautiful time of your life. <3

You can see another maternity session here when I was behind the camera and here and when I was in front of the camera. 😉
